Believe me, yours aren’t the only kids who leave the tops off the playdough containers so that it quickly become a dry, crusty rock. But making your own playdough at home is surprisingly easy to do! Here’s a recipe for super soft, super squishy playdough that needs only a few ingredients from your kitchen and, when stored in an air-tight container or plastic bag, will keep for up to three months.
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup salt
4 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 cups water, lukewarm
2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil
Food coloring (optional)
Steps
- In a large pot, stir together flour, salt and cream of tartar.
- Add water and oil to the pot. If you’re only making one color, add in the color (approx. 5 drops to start) now; if making more than one color, divide the dough at the end and mix color and dough in separate plastic bags.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Stir until the dough has thickened and begins to form a ball. Remove from heat and place inside a gallon-sized bag or onto wax paper.
- Cool slightly and then knead until smooth. You’re playdough is ready for play!
