How to Make Homemade Playdough

Believe me, yours aren’t the only kids who leave the tops off the playdough containers so that it quickly become a dry, crusty rock. But making your own playdough at home is surprisingly easy to do! Here’s a recipe for super soft, super squishy playdough that needs only a few ingredients from your kitchen and, when stored in an air-tight container or plastic bag, will keep for up to three months.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup salt

4 teaspoons cream of tartar

2 cups water, lukewarm

2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil

Food coloring (optional)

Steps

  1. In a large pot, stir together flour, salt and cream of tartar.
  2. Add water and oil to the pot. If you’re only making one color, add in the color (approx. 5 drops to start) now; if making more than one color, divide the dough at the end and mix color and dough in separate plastic bags.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Stir until the dough has thickened and begins to form a ball. Remove from heat and place inside a gallon-sized bag or onto wax paper.
  4. Cool slightly and then knead until smooth. You’re playdough is ready for play!
